Heute gibt's eine Sendung ganz ohne HipHop - dafür hört ihr großartige Platten vom King of Woolworths, World of Apples, Kosheen, Nitin Sawhney, dem indischen Filmmusikkomponisten Jolly Mukherjee, neues von 4 Hero, einen unveröffentlichten Mix von De-Phazz sowie Stücke von der B-Seite der limitierten Sonderausgabe von Black Lodge, einem neuen Mo' Wax Projekt. BTTB - Soul <-> HipHop: Der Vinylizer
In der heutigen Ausgabe der Reihe Soul <-> HipHop geht es
vor allem um einen Sample, der von Grand Funk Railroad stammt
und u.a. von den Beastie Boys, De La Soul, Masta Ace, Rob Swift
und DJ Shadow gesamplet wurde. Grand Funk Railroad ist ein
Rock-Trio, das 1968 gegründet wurde. Zu der Gruppe gehörten
der Gitarrist Mark Farner (geboren am 29. September 1948 in
Flint, Michigan, USA), der Bassist Mel Schacher (3. April 1951,
Owosso, Michigan, USA) und der Schlagzeuger Don Brewer (3.
September 1948, Flint, Michigan, USA). Eigentlich gab es das
Projekt schon länger, nur in anderer Konstellation
und unter anderem Namen: Terry Knight And The Pack, eine
lokal relativ populäre Soul-Rock Gruppe in Michigan. Farner und
Brewer gehörten von Anfang an dazu, Schacher stieg erst später
ein. Als der Kopf der Band, Terry Knight, nicht mehr als
Musiker auftreten wollte, sondern sich nur noch um das
Management kümmern wollte, wurde das Projekt in Grand Funk
Railroad umbenannt (Namenspate war die Grand Trunk Railroad
in Michigan). Das Trio unterzeichnete 1969 einen Labeldeal
mit Capitol und brachte gleich einige Singles mit Charterfolg
raus. Auch die Alben der Jahre 1970-74 erreichten ausnahmslos
die Top-10. Dabei waren diese Erfolge vor allem auf die gute
Arbeit des Managers Terry Knight zurückzuführen, und weniger
auf Radiosender, die ihre Werke oft ignorierten. Immerhin
schafften Grand Funk es im Juni 1971, daß das New Yorker Shea
Stadium ausverkauft war - das hatten vorher nur die Beatles
geschafft. 1972 feuerten sie dann aber Terry Knight, weil es
einige Gerichtsverfahren gegeben hatte. 1973 verkürzten sie
ihren Namen offiziell in Grand Funk und wurden um den Keyboarder
Craig Frost (20. April 1948, Flint, Michigan, USA) ergänzt. Die
Namensänderung machten sie 1975, als der Erfolg langsam nachliess,
wieder rückgängig. Das Album "Good Singin', Good Playin'" wurde
von Frank Zappa produziert und erreichte nicht die Top 50,
worauf Farner eine Solo Karriere startete. Die anderen blieben
zusammen, engagierten Billy Elworthy als neuen Gitarristen,
änderten den Projektnamen in Flint und hatten nie wieder den
Erfolg, den sie mit Grand Funk Railroad hatten. 1981 wurde
Grand Funk von Farner, Brewer und dem Bassisten Dennis Bellinger
wiedergegründet, blieb aber auch erfolglos. Wir hören ein Stück
aus dem Album "Closer To Home". Daneben gibt es Stücke von AZ,
Black Ivory, Latyrx, Quincy Jones, Raekwon, den Sweet Inspirations
und dem World Famous Supreme Team.

A mix by DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid of New York City ILLbient. This
is a record that encompasses a small aspect of the datacloud. First and
foremost it is a conceptual art project. Our viral sonic spores and
chronotopes have been released and they are spreading throughout
mindscreens of the planet earth. All the groups in this project are true
underground pioneers. Taking their mythologies from the future, they are
reality hackers. Tricksters at the end of time, they sing the body
electric... The anomalies in this mix are coordinate points marking an
invisible terrain. The hiss and pops, distortion and feedback, strange
silences that pop up from nowhere, scratchy record noises etc. are all
signifiers of a construction zone of sound seeking sensibility. Teach
your eyes to hear and your ears to see and you will understand what we

Auf den Compilations "Noodles Discotheque 1" und "Death Of Cool" von Si
Begg gab es ein paar Stücke von einem Musiker, der sich Cursor Miner nennt
und über den das Magazin NME schreibt: "Cursor Miner conjures the kind of
gibbering, hypermelodic super-fast scrambling you can expect to soundtrack
that pre-death moment when your life flashes fleetingly before you."
Cursor Miner ist ein in London wohnender Musiker, dessen stilistische
Bandbreite sich von Dada-Electropop über Whacky Industrial Funk bis hin
zu Abstract Noise erstreckt. Bei dieser Vielfalt ist allen Stücken ein
Hang zum unüblichem aber unglaublich mitreissendem Sound gemeinsam. Cursor
Miner versucht, ähnlich wie Mouse on Mars oder Leafcutter John, die
Soundvielfalt experimenteller Digitalmusik mit lyrischem und melodischem
Inhalt zu kombinieren. Auf seiner Website
www.cursorminer.com findet man dazu Hörbeispiele (MP3) und die Texte.
Erschienen sind Cursor Miners Stücke bisher u.a. auf Lo Recordings
("Fresh Fruit"-Compilation), Noodles ("Noodles Discotheque" und "Death Of Cool")
und der unerträglichen "Unbearable Heroes"-CD (Unbearable Records).
Eine EP soll im Oktober / November auf Uncharted Audio erscheinen.
Zum Namen Cursor Miner schreibt Cursor Miner:Put your metaphorical hats on for a moment and imagine that mankinds cultural information is a mine. Most people inhabit the central part of this mine, where things are safe and known, where the ceiling won't collapse and where you can't get lost. Others choose to leave the main parts and go futher out, dig new tunnels and find things that no one has found before. Eventually when the miners have carved their new tunnel the rest of society grows in to the new area. Without the raw material, society would stagnate. Di, 25.09.2001 ab 22 Uhr | BTTB - Back To The Basics Heute feiern wir die BTTB-X-Session vom vergangenen Freitag noch etwas nach und schauen gleichzeitig voraus auf eine X-Session, die im Oktober ausgestrahlt wird. Gemixt wurde die X-Session vom vergangenen Freitag von Cursor Miner, der aus dem Si Begg Umfeld stammt und u.a. Stücke auf Si's Noodles- und Death Of Cool-Compilations veröffentlicht hat. Ebenfalls aus dem Si Begg-Umfeld stammt Osymyso, dessen X-Session am 30.10. in BTTB laufen wird. Wir hören heute also durchgeknallte Musik von Si Begg (als Buckfunk 3000 und S.I.Futures), Osymyso und Cursor Miner (dessen aktuelle "This Mans Adventure EP" im Oktober auf Uncharted Audio erscheinen soll). Daneben wird es Musik von Depth Charge, Ming, Pedro und anderen geben. Und 100%ig ist dies eine der durchgeknalltesten BTTB-Sendungen ever!!! BTTB-X-Series: Sutekh
Seth Horvitz hated dance music until 1992, when the Violent
Unknown Event (VUE) struck his University of California dormitory,
provoking a peculiar fascination with electronic sound. This side
effect led him to use his college loan money to purchase a pair of
turntables and an analog synthesizer. Soon, he was hosting his own
weekly radio show at KALX Berkeley and spinning techno at house
parties and small, underground raves.
Upon completion of his Cognitive Science degree in 1995, Seth (aka Sutekh) briskly turned his back on academia and moved to the industrial sector of Oakland, where he teamed up with Belief Systems label founder Darin Marshall to release his first track on the "Swivel" compilation. Since then, his discography has grown to include releases on labels such as Drop Beat (Oakland), Cytrax and Delay (San Francisco), Tektite (Austin), Source (Heidelberg), Mille Plateaux/Force Inc. (Frankfurt), and his own label, Context. Sutekh's music incorporates a wide range of production techniques, including the use of raw and manipulated field recordings, digital processing, and sampling, as well as more traditional modes of analog synthesis. The results have varied from harsh unstructured noisescapes to tech-house DJ tools. Never sticking to one method, Sutekh's aim is to avoid the rut of predictability by making every release unique. In January of 1997, Sutekh became a resident DJ for Static, a weekly club in San Francisco, which after 3 years has gained an international reputation as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking electronic music weeklies in the country. His radio show takes a different approach to mixing, collaging styles such as dub, hip-hop, post-rock, jazz, and 20th century avant-garde with modern electronic music, thus revealing the diversity of his influences. In addition to his musical duties at home, Sutekh has travelled the globe, DJing and performing live at venues in Canada, England, France, Germany, Austria, Finland, and Russia. In his "spare" time, he designs flyers, album covers, and websites, plays ping pong and Scrabble(tm), and takes care of his two bastard children, Kevin Blechdom and Safety Scissors. Die X-Session hat Sutekh schon im Juli 2000 für BTTB produziert und da so enge Verbindungen zwischen Sutekh und Safety Scissors bestehen und weil es eine der besten X-Sessions des vergangenen Jahres war, ist dieser Mix einer der besten Ersatzmixes für den Mix von Safety Scissors. BTTB-X-Series: Osymyso
Es geht weiter mit einer Einstimmung auf den Oktober-Mix von Mark Nicholson aka
Osymyso. Osymyso hat 1999 ein Album mit dem Titel "Welcome to the Palindrome" auf
dem Label Sprawl
veröffentlicht und hat daneben diverse Maxis auf verschiedenen Labels rausgebracht.
Im vergangenen Jahr hat er außerdem einen Mix für den Breezeblock auf Radio 1
produziert, und genau den Mix möchte er den BTTB-Hörern als Vorgeschmack auf seine X-Session am 30.10. nicht vorenthalten.
